“Mohawk”, an ancient Iroquois tribe, a modern College Reply

The Mohicans of James Fennimore Cooper and today’s Six Nations tribe have a long and respected history vis-à-vis Canada. Joe Brant; the War of 1812, and the ‘guardians’ of early New York, are part of our combined history. In 1966, MOHAWK COLLEGE was formed and today stands as one of the most successful colleges in the country. For very personal association and respect, we decided to cover its graduation ceremony rather than a McMaster or U of T convocation.

The GTA’s ‘Fringe Festival’ season looms just over the horizon; what better time to stage a couple of Fringe-type 1-hour plays than now! Izad Etemadi’s “LAUGH WITH LEILA” and “XOXO: the RELATIONSHIP SHOW” created & starring Meghan Chalmers & Franny McCabe-Bennett, both inform and educate as well as entertain.
The former one-man effort introduces us to a young and single Iranian girl growing up in post-Shah Pahlevi Persia and under the sharia rule of Khomeini. ‘Hijab’; Chador; ‘Niqab’ and Burkas are all humorously defined and visually delineated.

Mecca; Mt. Fuji; Jerusalem; the Ganges; Lumbini & Nazareth – all iconic or religious sites and a must-see for the faithful. For the worshippers/ enthusiasts of North American motorcycle biking it’s the Black Hills of South Dakota and Sturgis this August for the 76th anniversary and almost an 11th commandment. Close behind; any non-Winter Friday 13th means mandatory pilgrimages to Norfolk County’s PORT DOVER, especially as this 57th such celebration is the last for the next few years! Alas, age & infirmity deny this rider’s participation.

Lately; the major media has been inconsistent in coverage of things cultural, thus demand for our efforts has increased exponentially. In order to fulfill additional reportage requests, we’ve asked Judith Robinson to assist as associate editor; and recruited the following additions to our contributor list. All possess knowledge and an affection for the arts. We’re fortunate to have them join our family.

David and Jan Richards are consummate music lovers who met at the opera 25 years ago. They both have undergraduate degrees in music—David trained as a pianist and choral director, and Jan as a double-bassist.Reviewers Dave & Jan More…

“ART”; different genres but the same aesthetic basics Reply

First, one needs an idea or concept; then a vision of how to express that hypothesis. This is followed by choice of tones, media, emphasis and articulation. The result, if technically precise is designated art. This scribe has always thought that the design and creativity of the automotive industry met the criteria, especially during the fifties to seventies. My ‘Mona Lisa’s were and are the 1957 Belair convertible; the ‘56 Lincoln Capri; the ‘57 Thunderbird and the ‘el ultimo’ 1960 Caddie Eldorado!

O.A.R.’s “THE TOP TEN”, 2015 2

This is the beginning of our 2nd decade of Arts Review’s TOP TEN (or 16th as our own publishers). As always, choices are made regarding the educational; entertainment or professionalism values of events we attended during the calendar year.

5 @ the 1st;  a January concert titled ‘Czech Celebration’ made for a warm Saturday afternoon featuring compositions by Dvořák; Pichl & Martinu. The presentations; arrangements and technical expertise exhibited- earned this chamber group their first inclusion in our annual list.

Theatre Unlimited; all of our contributors; due to the ubiquitous nature of ‘The Sound of Music’ know the music & lyrics ad nauseum. But the competence of direction; stage crew and cast – especially the Von Trapp kiddies; made this iteration a standout and proof positive that community theatre can off-times hold its own with the professional producers.
